Landscapes

Here you'll find a collection of the landscape paintings and artworks I have completed over the last few years. Get in touch if you have a specific landscape you'd like me to paint as a commission!

La Journée de la Voile (Sailing Day)

£295

I'm mad about reflections! If it's not in a shiny coffee pot or silver bowl, it'll be reflections in water. This piece was directly inspired by a photograph by Thomas Deregnieaux, a fantastic maritime photographer who documented a trip I took in July 2020 with my partner, his father, and a friend on a yacht off the Brittany coast. A few weeks later I saw the photograph online, and with Thomas' permission tried to capture the joyous movement of the ocean that we felt as we were sailing. What a beautiful day!

Doëlan I

£295

I named this piece Doëlan I as I truly expect to paint more of this beautiful village in the future. During our trip to the little town in Brittany, I took so many photos of the boats in the harbour. There's something about the way a boat's colours get reflected in gentle waters that grabs me every single time. I find it impossible not to want to paint it! This particular rowing boat grabbed my eye as we walked past it every day when heading to the local bar for l'apéro. I enjoyed trying to capture the ripples in the water, and ended up with a slightly psychedelic painting — which I'm okay with!

Hope Cove

£95

I finished this piece in 2017 after undertaking a seascape painting course in Cardiff. I particularly enjoyed painting this piece as I was encouraged to experiement with texture paste. I mixed the paste with browns and yellows to create a hard, rocky texture similar to that of an actual rock. Then, I mixed the paste with titanium white to try and capture the splashy effect of the waves as they crashed into the rocks, almost jumping out of the painting. It was great fun, though I haven't tried this technique again  since.

This piece was featured in an exhibition at Poltimore Festival in 2018 as part of my series on the senses. If you are interested in purchasing this piece, I would recommend putting it in a good frame as this was originally painted on sketchbook paper (A3), so isn't as sturdy as a canvas.

Wave

£95

This piece was also finished as part of the seascape course I undertook in Cardiff in 2017. A fictional wave, I tried to capture the rushed feeling of energy felt in the pull of a wave as it breaks, while also experimenting with deep greens and blues — some of my favourite colours to play with. I'm also pretty happy with the rocks in this piece; they came out much better than I expected after I decided to add them in towards the end to frame the piece well. These features add some context and narrative to a piece, setting a scene in the way a lone wave might not have managed.

Similar to the Hope Cove seascape, I would recommend storing this piece in a good frame as it was also produced on A3 sketchbook paper.

Les Anglais

£295

Abstract time! With my first foray into oil paints, I tried to capture that feeling of paddling in seawater; looking down into the shallows, where your feet are nestled among beautiful rocks of rusty red and baby blue, the hot sun warming your back as your toes settle into the sand under the cold water. I felt this overwhelmingly nostalgic feeling at the Les Anglais beach in Brittany in July 2020, so called as it was supposedly where English troops stormed France during the war (as opposed to where the Americans landed a few coves down).

Getting used to oil paints is tricky, but I was determined to capture the weird angles made when the light hit the water, and blend this into the colours beneath. The result was a sort of absract piece that I have come to love over time.
